Are you tired of battling persistent back pain? You’re not alone. Back pain affects millions of people worldwide, with up to 80% of adults experiencing it at some point in their life. It can significantly impact your quality of life and is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. At SparkPhysio, we understand the frustration and limitations that come with back pain, which is why we’re here to offer you effective solutions.

Understanding the Cause

Contrary to popular belief, back pain is most often caused by factors that won’t show up on imaging tests like x-ray, MRI, or CT scans. Most cases are due to “non-specific” low back pain, in which there is pain, but no specific tissue to blame. This is primarily because pain is not something able to be detected on any type of imaging. This includes diagnosis such as back strains, muscle strain or spasms, or sciatica.

Some other types of back pain that may have findings on imaging would include disc bulges or herniations, facet arthropathy, or stenosis. However, even if these things are found on imaging, they are not always indicative of pain. (And that’s the topic for a different blog.)

The role of physical therapy

Movement is Medicine and physical therapy plays a vital role in managing and alleviating back pain by addressing underlying issues and restoring movement patterns. Through a combination of hands-on therapy, targeted exercises, physical therapy can be a very effective non-invasive treatment to get rid of pain and improve your function so you can get back to crushing your goals.

The Power of Strength Training.

Strength training is a cornerstone of back pain treatment, and for good reason. Building overall strength, not just in the core muscles, is crucial for providing support and stability to the spine. Incorporating exercises like deadlifts, squats, and rows can help strengthen the muscles of the back, hips, and legs, reducing the risk of injury and improving overall function.

Prevention is Key

Preventing back pain is just as important as treating it. Simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Quitting smoking, staying active through regular exercise (including strength training), changing positions frequently if you have to sit or stand for long periods, and lifting smartly by using your legs instead of your back can all help reduce the risk of developing back pain.
